In Quebec, the rearing of grain-fed calves is governed by a compulsory on-farm certification program. Producers compel themselves, by regulation, to follow specifications that prescribe production standards: product quality, herd management, feed, traceability and animal welfare. All the care provided to the animals is recorded in appropriate registers. To provide their animals with all the required care, producers resort to competent professionals, technicians, agronomists and veterinarians, who support them in managing their herd. Since April 2004, grain-fed calves produced in Quebec do not receive growth hormones. This very strict requirement is prescribed in the producers’ specifications. Health Canada also oversees its application through the inspection service of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. The certification program assures consumers of the quality and authenticity of Quebec Certified Grain-Fed Veal. |
